Evidence of Change

July 9, 2007

I just found a post over at Walter Jon Williams blog about the amount of promotion that a midlist author has to do to make a living. To me, it seems like its more evidence that the industry is in a state of flux at the moment. What’s new, what I thought of as interesting, was the idea that authors will be the engines of change for the publishing industry. Up until about five minutes ago, I had been thinking that someday a publisher would get their act together and it would revolutionize the industry, but that makes no sense. Currently, the publishers are the people who benefit most from the status quo, the people who will benefit most from change are midlist authors like Mr. Williams and new writers like myself. Interesting. Now just to figure out how that change will happen . . .
