New Business Model for Music Downloads

Just read an article over at CNN Money about an online music store where the popularity of a given song will determine its price. Basically, all songs start out free, and as they become more popular they also become more expensive, with a cap of $0.98. There is also a system that encourages recommendations by offering credits if the song becomes popular. The music industry will probably hate this, but it also has the potential to be huge. This is the first time I’ve seen anyone really take advantage of the potential of the internet as a sales tool, and it suggests that the best business model for creative works (including short fiction, which I’ve been writing about) probably hasn’t even been invented yet.
